Chateau de Singes

Château de Singes aka Chateau la Folie is an abandoned mansion in France with a stunning staircase and a lovely room with murals of monkeys.

Château de Singes (Castle of Monkeys) or sometimes called Chateau la Folie is an abandoned mansion in France. The stunning staircase is the main attraction, but the rest of the building holds just as much charm. Built to an unusual design, the château is extremely wide but almost exclusively just one room deep. This means almost every room has external windows to both the front and back of the property, flooding the extravagant rooms with natural light.

Unfortunately the owner could not afford the ongoing costs of running and maintaining such a property. As a result less and less of the home was used and the owner was eventually confined to just a single room with only a couple of portable heaters for warmth.

I’d seen plenty of pictures of the staircase here and was excited about seeing it in real life. Often, the real life view of forgotten places can be disappointing after seeing great pictures on the internet. However, this place was a real treat – the entire building was so much more impressive in real life than the photos convey. Loved every minute of this visit. The room with monkey murals was my favourite bit.

  1. Wow mate you done this one good! so many cool shots! the external looks ace with the overgrowth and the view through the windows in the internals are great! top work!

  2. breathtaking, thank you for sharing your work so we can wander through these spaces with you! (I like the large room with arched windows best) loved the captured light upstairs and the roof space- and of course the stairs! such a beautiful building inside and out.

  3. Amazing house. Fabulous photos. Love your work. Feel sad for the Chateau. Someone should have loved it back to life.

  4. Recently found it it has been bought and the new owner is already cleaning up the property and taking steps to protect the house. Hopefully it will be returned to it’s former glory. So glad that this beautiful house now has a chance of surviving!!
