History of the abandoned Schloss V Castle

Schloss V, sometimes called Piano Castle, is a stunning castle in Germany with a history dating back to the Middle Ages. A fire ripped through the original house in around 1500 and completely destroyed it. The house was rebuilt, retaining some of the original walls and basement, and the house was remodelled numerous times over the years. The current castle takes the form of two large wings at a right angle to each other, connected by a central rotunda and topped with stone decoration.

A large stable-block to the rear of the property remains, and has elegant glazed brick decorations.

The castle was most recently used as a teacher training centre and then as a hospital. The castle was then sold off but the owner became bankrupt before finding a suitable use for it. The building has stood empty ever since.

  1. ,,,another amazing report, w/some excellent photos! It always amazes me, being both German, and a preservationist, that in a country that loves their old buildings and keeping them in pristine shape, that these places even exist. But, this is 2015, and money is the prevaliant reason for everything, that said the western sector, things are in better shape, in the eastern sector, time stood still after WW2, Things there remained in a time warp, and much of the old, was left to rot, due to lack of funds, while there is hope, so many are past hope, but I always pray, before they are gone, that they get taken care of. Restored, renovated or re-purposed. I hope this place. will move forward w/renewed hope.

  2. Top one Andy. This place is really nice. have seen that fireplace a few times but never realised the exterior was the same place.

  3. Fantastic photos, Andy!
Curious what lens you used for the stone staircase. Obviously pretty wide-angle.

  4. You would have to be really rich to own this and pay people to clean, cook, and keep the grounds looking nice. This is beautiful!
